My mother's daughter

Let me tell you about my mother and why it would be very hard for me to live up to who she is.

My mom came from very humble beginnings. After dinner the other night I stayed at the table (and munched on tortilla chips and salsa hehe) as she told me stories about her youth.

I'll be honest, my ego received a well-deserved beating.

My mother grew up with five other siblings and a mother who didn't have a job. Her mother was also a strong woman, never whined about her hardship, raised her kids, and all they would eat was a ten cent thin slab of butter, which they will all share, spreading it thinly on bread just enough for it to yellow a little, and boiled coffee. My mom would lie about being full to her friends. Only one of her friends knew her status. To be honest I get why their friends found it unbelievable that she and my auntie were poor. They were very beautiful, looked healthy, and their skin was fair and smooth, and in my country, fair white skin was(/is, to be honest) a social status.

Going back to my point, after she had finished highschool, she was devastated thinking that college was not in the cards for her, simply because she didn't have the SIXTY PESOS it took to pay for tuition. Sixty pesos is a dollar (and fourty two cents).

A DOLLAR.

And fourty-two cents.

Anyway, this guy who was courting her throughout highschool (he was a few grades higher. tellin you, my mom was hot stuff), just after being dumped, essentially, made his friend give her an envelope containing the sixty pesos saying that he won't see her again so that she would know that this is not an attempt to make her change her mind, and that she needn't pay her back, and she should pay it forward. (My mom was sixteen, this was DECADES before the movie.)

My mom enrolled herself and started working. At the ripe age of seventeen. She always gave half of her pay to her mom for their family, and even bought dinner at times. Her mother was very grateful.

Meanwhile here I am, delaying graduation for not much reason at all. I had the nerve to feel resentful towards her at times for not reaching out to me or not using proper parenting techniques. For making me feel insecure about my body image. For not being able to do much positive reinforcement.

Basically, problems she worked really hard her whole life for.

What?

Yes.
This triangle explains everything.

My mother had done such a tremendous job in her life so far, that from a child who grew up barely having anything to eat, having a leaky roof over her head, which is the bottom area in the hierarchy of needs, (not propagating this at all, just using it to illustrate my point) she's gone as far as to have gotten to raise children who have, I'm willing to admit, borderline "first world problems", in a way.

Problems about validation, social justice, discrimination, self-fulfillment, artistic endeavour... Would I even have time to worry about these had she not provided a good home for me even when she hadn't grown up in one?

I now see how amazing that is, and all I have is humility (a bit of shame, really. or a lot), and complete and utter admiration.

But I also honor, that maybe this isn't regressive or neglectful/ungrateful in my part. Maybe it is in fact progressive and merely natural.

People have the tendency to preach and demonize the fact that people like me don't hold things like graduating precious. Personally, I decide time and time again to take my time before I graduate. I keep thinking that value is more important than the label, while for my mom, she had to graduate NO MATTER WHAT. It was a matter of survival to her. A matter of having a chance at life at all. I meanwhile view this differently, something that would have been impossible without her efforts to raise herself up from the life she knew.

I recently realized how I wasn't actually extremely spoiled as a child, looking at actually spoiled children, and resented a little bit that I was brought up to believe so. I was labelled and called materialistic and spoiled and selfish (painful memories really), and even though I still maintain that I probably didn't deserve some of it, now that I'm older and able to really understand the cause-and-effect of the situation, I understand completely how that  could have happened, and I forgive the past. If I lived their lives, I would indeed probably call myself spoiled. But I'm also eternally grateful to my parents to have provided me a kind of life which made it possible for me to even be spoiled. Placing the two circumstances side by side, I was strolling in malls, asking to be bought toys I found pretty. My mother didn't even have food to eat everyday.

I hope that in my own way I also get to raise myself up. In a different wavelength maybe, now that being a social class higher is unnecessary because I already have food to eat, and a sturdy roof over my head. I hope I get to use the resources that my mother and father had made available for me. To make something great even if I don't get to do what is expected (usually the case, hehe).

What I Wore: Teacher Bea?

Last week I applied for a teaching position in a daycare nearby (like literally it's like a five-ten minute walk from my house)... I'm not taking it, something I'll get into after making you look at what I wore 'cos I took pictures and I don't do this a lot so appreciate it. I was after looking like something kids would smile at. Like a clown.

I very spontaneously came up with the ribbon chain necklace the night before. I have a lot of scrap material lying around that I have been organizing into boxes and little drawers and I don't know, I guess I was in the mood for a bow tie.

It could be worn two ways and I could do a tutorial on this but it's really too easy. Just make a bow out of ribbon, thread a small-linked chain through it horizontally, and use a safety pin to clasp the two ends together.

When I tested how it would look with the shirt laid out on the bed it looked better with a bit of one end of the chain hanging down (top right image), but within seconds of wearing it like that I remembered my aversion to anything staying too close to my neck. I was probably hung to death in a previous life. So I decided  to pin it on the last link and let some chain slack show (top left).

For my nails I went for the "I don't hurt children" look.
I was wearing my neon melty sploosh bday nails just the day before and thought they looked massacresque.

Anyway, I don't think I'm coming back for the demo. I mean, they postponed it until further notice but I think I'll have to deny it when it comes.

My interviewer was awesome. She was so open and honest. A lot of the things she said really made me think, and in the end here are the things I realised:

  1. 22 isn't THAT young and whatever I take on at this age and keep at for five years will be the thing I'll be doing when I am 27. The thought of being a teacher at that age apparently doesn't look that great to me.
  2. I like teaching children and I feel good when I feel like I've taken part in forming them to be good adults and I think I have a talent for it, but maybe I can do it in other ways that are more true to myself. I want to have a unique relationship with each young person I get to know. I don't think it's achievable in a classroom setting.
  3. This is a career for people that take on it. A real passion I can't match. Heck, just the idea of committing for a whole school year scared me.

So yep. Not going to happen for me. I can maybe be a sub. Or do a summer thing teaching special subjects.  But as for now, what this experience has taught me, if anything at all, is that I should just go for what I want right away. I realized that my attempts at taking "side jobs" before jumping in to something "real" was maybe a disguised way of avoiding the jump, out of fear.

Right now I'm putting both my tutoring and teaching job ideas aside to make way for genuine inspiration, and creation from somewhere more genuine and organic, and the general revamping of my home life, which is very important to me. Life is short you know. Maybe I shouldn't be so afraid of going after what I want. I'd sure waste more time if I mourn what I wish I wanted to do instead of just looking at what I want to do and DOING it. Not saving it for later when I "deserve" it already. I also want to take care of my body better. I feel more cooperative in the house and it feels great. Even made my relationship with my mom better! I'm also working on being a better friend. So all in all, this period feels like a real beginning for me.

Everyday lately, (even though I unfortunately have been waking up late in the morning or noon) I wake up feeling excited. There is some spark in what I do, some love, some intention, and I just generally feel more alive. Tomorrow will start early for me (I hope! fingers crossed) and I want to end the morning being almost done with the "regurgitation" of all the crap in my room. Then I will get crafting. And then? We will see where my hands will take me :D

Spring Cling

Ah yes the spring cling. As in, when it's so hot that your clothes tend to cling to your skin, smothering your slick stinky goodness.

'Kay this image is a hyperbole
For us people living in the tropics, this is what Spring actually means. It's not the comfy cushion season between winter and summer when it's finally comfortable enough to clean the whole house. It's just sun, sun, and the occasional shocker drizzle. IN YOUR FACE.

Be that as it may, it's somehow spring cleaning season in my house, in a small kinda way, and really slowly, may have been a month now, since the heat is so unbearable.

My personal progress with my room is going slow too. I wish I had taken photos of how it looked at the start. It made my mother screech at me whenever she came in. But I had my film production as an excuse. It was obviously a DIY sorta project. I have since cleared out a lot of my junk, which is visible in my birthday post, but I'm farrrrr from over.

But if you haven't noticed, I just gave my blog a tiny facelift. I renewed my sidebar to contain something that is a better self-introduction and hopefully more helpful for people who need to decide if they want me to look at their blog, and if they want to follow me. My little spiel might reoccur on the about me page though, which I have yet to tinker with.

Secondly I have decided to give myself the liberty of changing the subtitle in my blog, letting it be instead more of a headline of sorts. The idea of a permanent subtitle isn't sitting well with me. "kid forever" often read as scary to me. Might go be a seasonal thing, since I just started with "this spring". I'm fickle, who knows.

Anyway, I hope to get more readers and more people to interact with this year. I think blogs are a great way to get to know people. It's even brought me and one of my best friends Jessica closer now that she lives a bit farther away and busy with mom stuff etc. I'm just not always sure how to(Pun not intended) get to it and all that. I'll try to figure it out, though. But.. Do you have any tips?

A love story with my life's passion.

It somehow feels like things are starting to fall into place...

I feel like I've grown a new heart after trying to wander a little bit more
Before I committed
"So that I don't miss any chances"
"So that I don't leave any box unopened"

In the end I find, I was just unsure of my love.
And my new brave heart ended up showing me what I want to be committed to

And ended up showing me that there's no need to wander at all

Because there are no limits to a love that is true!

Okay, naw, naw, for serious: Something clicked in me, yesterday or today. Not quite sure because my sleeps are all haywire. "Snapped" is actually a better match for the intensity if it wasn't riddled with a negative connotation.

I feel like I've always felt pressured to make failed efforts of the past matter. I've been ailed by the thought that I needed to make university count and stick to "my field" but I now see that this takes the life out of anything I do.

I *think* I'm starting to find my way. Emphasis on "my". Fingers crossed!

Me I'm a Creator

Sharing with you my recipe for DIY waxing sugar/sugaring wax and some of the tinkery stuff I've been busy with so far this summer.
USE LOW HEAT after it's started boiling. it has to brown slowly.

Rose propagation; star jar we'll need to fill up in Bora

Bottom-right image: Bohol Sand, Bora sand! Some orange sand idk

Have had this sand in this jar since my friend Jenny and mine's trip to bora. Sacrificed it for the roses I want to root. Even if it fails, they will see I tried my best. And There's a guarantee to me getting to fill it up again anyway :) Still kept some of it though.

Today was a looong day and it took a full three days for this post to happen. I guess I just didn't have any words to say. But pictures say thousands of them or some shit, right?

As if I didn't have too many interests as it is...

I forgot to add this picture after uploading it for my blogpost about My Flower Depot:

The roses as they now stand
Today upon receiving these roses I was riddled with a very deep desire to grow them. I haven't actually had the opportunity to find out whether I have a green thumb or not. Now that I got the flowers right as they arrived instead of after four hours after they've already given up on life a little, I had a huge feeling of "I can save these!"

Spent the whole afternoon pruning and tending these things, and preserving the last bouquet, and even testing out some propagation methods on the last bouquet. (and pressing some buds I was willing to give up) I somehow can't detach myself from the idea that these are living things. This makes me want to make them live.

On sunday I'll try to propagate a couple of them. We'll see where it goes from there. Even if I fail, I'll know I tried.
